How to read a spar drawing before you cut metal

A practical walk-through of datum lines, fastener callouts, and the notes that save a weekend of scrap on a light-aircraft spar.

Before aluminium leaves the rack in our Structures Intensive, learners spend an evening with the drawing pack. The title block tells you revision letter and material callout; ignore either and you can cut the wrong temper.

Datum lines first

Find the primary datum along the spar cap. Every hole pattern and rib station should reference that line. If a note says “see detail B,” open detail B before you mark the stock—our tutors will ask you to point to the datum aloud in the first lab.

Fastener callouts

Spacing is not decoration. Edge distance and pitch protect the spar from tear-out under bending. When a drawing lists mixed diameters, mark them in two colours on your print so the drill sequence stays honest.

Notes that save scrap

Shop notes about grain direction, temporary fasteners, and inspection hold points belong on your bench sheet. Bring that sheet to Saturday lab; we mark against it, not against memory.
